Our
Story

The Midlands STEM Journey
In 2012, Kevin Thomas wrote a letter to the Herald Independent Newspaper in Winnsboro, SC. He envisioned a tuition free Public Charter School in Fairfield County. This would enable parents and students of the community to have a school of choice.
Mr. Thomas partnered with longtime SC Educator, Marie Milam, and they co-founded Midlands Stem Institute.
The school opened as a K5-5th grade school in August of 2014.
MSI would add a grade each year until it became a PreK4 -12th grade Public Charter School in 2022.
In 2023, MSI officially changed their name to Midlands STEM Charter School. In 2024 Midlands STEM Charter School moved into their permanent location.
